You’re sitting in your child’s spring IEP meeting, and the team moves through the Extended School Year (ESY) section in about 30 seconds. They mention that regression isn't a concern, check a box, and move on. Every gap in services, every long break, every summer without support widens the distance between them and their peers. I'm Jenny Sherson, ex-special educator turned dyslexia interventionist. It wasn't so long ago that I too was overwhelmed by balanced literacy versus structured literacy, education speak, and everything in between.

Fast forward after many, many hours of self-driven education, and you'll see I've built a thriving dyslexia practice helping students from age 6 to 18. My specialties, working with a quote-unquote difficult, almost always to read, student, and breaking down the complexities of dyslexia into everyday language strategies and action steps. You're sitting in your child's spring IEP meeting.

The team has gone through the present levels, the goals, the services, and then someone gets to the ESY section, extended school year, and they move through it in about 30 seconds. We don't think regression is really concerned, so we won't be recommending ESY. Check.

Next item. You didn't push back. Not because you didn't care, but because you had no idea there was anything to push back on.

That's what we're fixing today. ESY stands for extended school year services, and the first thing I want you to know is what it is not. It is not summer school.

It is not the district summer reading program. It is not an enrichment camp or a tutoring referral. ESY is a special education service.

It exists under IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and it's part of your child's right to a free, appropriate public education. When a child qualifies for ESY, those services get written directly into their IEP. It is individualized, just like everything else in the IEP is supposed to be.

It is not a program your child gets slotted into. It's a service. The same IEP goals your child has been working on all year, continuing through the summer, with progress still being monitored and reported on.

And here's something that surprises a lot of parents. ESY services don't have to happen at school. I've worked with several students who received their one-on-one structured literacy intervention through the summer as an ESY service.

We kept meeting online, from home, on a schedule that actually worked for summer life. The school approved the number of sessions, and we had the flexibility to spread those across the summer in a way that made sense for those families. That kind of flexibility is worth knowing about.

Here's something important to understand about why ESY gets 30 seconds at the IEP table. ESY is service-based. That means it's not a teacher and a room full of kids doing worksheets.

It means the school has to find and coordinate a qualified service provider, someone who can actually continue working on your child's specific IEP goals. And depending on the district, that might mean contracting someone outside of their regular staff for just a few months in the summer. That is a real logistical and financial challenge for them.

So the path of least resistance is to move through that section quickly, cite regression, and close the door before you knew there were other doors to even open. I want to be clear. I'm not saying everyone in that room is acting in bad faith, but I am saying that when you don't know the full picture, you can't ask the right questions.

So let's go through it all. First up, regression and recoupment. This is the one you've probably heard.

The question it asks is, does your child lose skills over an extended break? And if so, how long does it take them to get it back to where they were? For a lot of kids with dyslexia, this absolutely applies. Decoding, fluency, phonological awareness. These can slide significantly over a long summer without continued support.

Next, degree of progress. This looks at whether your child is making meaningful progress towards their IEP goal and whether a long break would significantly disrupt that momentum. Progress that is hard won and fragile doesn't survive a 10 to 12 week gap the way stronger, more automatic skills might.

Next up, emergency skills and breakthrough opportunities. And this is what I really want you to listen to. This is when a child is right at the edge of something new.

The pieces are starting to click. The skill is almost there. A long break at exactly this moment, right when these things are breaking through, can derail everything that took months to build.

For kids who are finally starting to connect sounds to print, finally starting to decode with any real consistency, this window matters enormously. Nature and severity of disability is next. And here's where I want you to think about something called the Matthew effects.

It comes from the world of reading research and special education. And it describes something that happens to struggling readers over time. The name comes from the biblical idea that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

And that's exactly what happens with reading. Kids who read well, read more, learn more vocabulary, build more background knowledge and keep pulling ahead. Kids who struggle to read fall further and further behind.

Not because they aren't working hard, but because every gap in services, every long break, every summer without support widens the distance between them and their peers. The whole point of special education services is to close that gap as efficiently and as appropriately as we can for each child. Reading is not just an academic skill.

It affects everything, every subject, every job application, every form they'll ever have to fill out. When we talk about the nature and severity of a disability, we are talking about what happens when services stop. We're talking about a gap that gets harder to close the longer it grows.

Next up is special circumstances, a broader category that can include medical factors, behavioral factors, or other individual circumstances that make continuity of services, especially critical for a specific child. Finally, interfering behaviors. If a child has behaviors connected to their disability that are actively being addressed as part of their program, a long summer without support can cause those behaviors to escalate and make the fall much harder for everyone involved.

One more important thing, the names and groupings of these criteria can vary by state. IDEA set the federal foundation, but your state may have its own regulations, its own specific language, its own standards for how ESY eligibility gets determined and delivered. After you listen to this episode, search your state's name and extended school year special education regulations.

Know what your state regulations say. That language gives you real power at the table. Here's what I want you to walk away with today.

ESY is a required part of your child's IEP meeting, not an afterthought, not optional. The team has to address it. And regression is one of several ways your child might qualify, not the only one.

Pull out your child's current IEP, look at the goals, think about where they are right now. Are skills just starting to emerge? Is there momentum a 12-week break could derail? Is the gap between your child and their peers already a concern? And then go check your state's specific ESY regulations so that you know exactly what standards apply where you live. If you're heading into a spring IEP meeting and ESY hasn't come up the way it should, or you're not sure how to respond if the team tries to close that door real quick, that's exactly the kind of work we work through together inside Together Through Dyslexia.
